Parent Resources
DCS provides a variety of services for parents who have children or teenagers who are Deaf or hard of hearing. This includes counseling, community education events, information and referral, and advocacy services.
Counseling services are available for parents and families who are struggling with issues connected with having a Deaf or hard of hearing member of the family. This might mean hearing parents who now have a Deaf or hard of hearing child or teenager, and need help in understanding the child's needs and how best to provide education, support, and parenting for the child. It might mean parents who are Deaf or hard of hearing themselves, and who are having problems deciding what's best for their child or teenager, who might be Deaf or hard of hearing or hearing. Each of these situations presents unique family communication and living challenges. DCS's counselors are experienced and ready to provide the help and support parents and families need in dealing with these sometimes complex and difficult situations.
Community education events are usually held one or more times each month. Some of these community education events are of special interest to parents. Click here to check our calendar, to see what events are coming up. The calendar will also lead you to a way to sign up for these events.
Information and referral is another important function when you just need a little help in finding the right bit of information: Where is the next meeting of Deaf Standard Time? Where can I find an alarm clock with a flashing light or vibration function instead of sound? Where can I get the best deal on hearing aid services? Are there any churches that provide amplification services, captioning, CART services, or sign language interpretation for church services? Our staff can answer most of these questions easily, and know where to find the answer if it is not already in their memory banks.
Advocacy services can help when you need a little extra “oomph” in figuring out how to deal with the school, the doctor's office, the courts or juvenile probation department, the DMV, or other services, when you and/or your child or teenager are Deaf or hard of hearing.
Life can get tough and complicated sometimes, but you don't have to deal with all of it alone. Call us! We can help. |
