"The Future of Sign Languages"
A Special Presentation by Carol Padden, Ph.D.
Hello, I’m Katey Bartie at Deaf Community Services of San Diego. Exciting news! Tickets are now on sale for Carol Padden’s special presentation, “The Future of Sign Languages.” This event will take place on Saturday, October 18, 2008, at the University of California, San Diego, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. A reception will follow. Price? $25.00 for the general public, $15.00 for students with I.D. Carol has generously agreed to do this on behalf of DCS to celebrate the International Day of Sign Languages, so please give us your support!
To order tickets online, go to tinyurl.com/cpaddengeneral (General Admission) or tinyurl.com/cpaddenstudent (Student with ID), or come to DCS and fill out a form at the front desk. You can pay with a check or cash. You should receive a confirmation message after placing your order on the Internet. On the day of the event, you’ll check in and be given a badge with your name. Tickets do not have to be presented at the door.
What’s Carol’s talk about? The question so many of you have often asked—will sign languages survive in the new century? How will cochlear implants and genetic research affect sign languages around the world? She’ll also share film footage of her trip to the Israeli desert to study a Bedouin tribe where everyone speaks sign language and Deaf people are tribal leaders.
This special event has something for everyone. Interpreters will get .15 CEUs from RID for attending, and they’ll learn something new! ASL teachers, students, linguists, anthropologists, researchers, people who love Deaf culture and sign language, the Deaf community, those who are curious—all of you will be fascinated by Carol’s lecture!
Who is Carol Padden? She’s a renowned Professor of Communication at UCSD with a specialty in sign languages. This year, UCSD recognized her as the university’s Top Faculty Lecturer, a high honor. Carol will sign for herself during her lecture, and two interpreters will voice for those who do not sign. Open captions will also be provided.
Seats in the Hojel Hall of the Americas Auditorium at UCSD are limited. Make your reservations NOW!
Please come for this unique evening! We’d love to see you there!
