History of Deaf Awarenes Day

THE VERY FIRST Deaf Awareness Day -- affectionately called D.A.D. -- took place in 1996 at the Kearny Mesa Recreation Center, drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd. The as now, D.A.D. is a special community event for local organizations to host a full-day observance of the language and heritage of the Deaf community and to foster sensitivity to the unique and diverse needs of deaf, late-deafened, and hard of hearing people.

September 22, 2001 marks a revival of D.A.D. organizers and sponsors invite you to gather to recognize and appreciate American Sign Language (ASL) and the culture of Deaf people in America. We encourage you to celebrate the rich tapestry of ASL, listen with your eyes to humorous and fascinating tales from the Deaf-World, meet friends old and new, survey the many booth displays answering every need and whim, and most of all, be part of a day that is designed especially for YOU, your friends and family by those who belong to your community. Please join us!
